Upon the recommendation of a Scottish publisher, we are reprinting as a single volume this most critically acclaimed and popular of modern Camaldolese books. It is a guide to the hermit way of life, based on the teaching of Blessed Paul Giustiniani and featuring a memorable preface by Thomas Merton. Jean Leclerq, O.S.B. (1911-1993) is widely regarded as the foremost twentieth century scholar of Western monasticism, and this is one of his most impressive achievements. If you are only going to read one work of monastic spirituality in your lifetime, this could be your best choice.
Alone with God edition by Dom Jean Leclercq Thomas Merton Religion Spirituality eBooks
Familiar with western monasticism and having heard of this classic, I thought to give it a close reading. I found this book to be very insightful and full of wisdom. For any serious seeker interested in taking a look at a more solitary approach to God influenced by monastic/eremitic spirituality, this book serves well. Thomas Merton provides the foreword. An indication of this timeless classics worth. Merton would never give his name to any publication less than honorable. I do believe you'll enjoy this book and refer to it often.Product details

Alone with God edition by Dom Jean Leclercq Thomas Merton Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
nice and very new
Excellent.
This is for the soul truly searching for that connection with God.
Nicely done book written with much clarity on a religious calling where there is not much information. This book explains the necessity of Hermits and why they are needed.
One of the best all time look at it means to be a mystic, contemplative, hermit past and present.
This book's main theme is all about being a HERMIT. However, the type of HERMIT in this book is a SPIRITUAL HERMIT. A SPIRITUAL HERMIT is one who has basically left this world to follow Christ and become closer to God. It is a spiritual journey, a solitary life, yet a prayer filled life. And after reading this book, my opinion is that the HERMIT is one that chooses this life and in addition is called to this lifestyle.
For me, I have been studying both regular secular HERMITS and SPIRITUAL HERMITS for some time now and wondered why these men or women would become a hermit, how to become one etc. This book has answered many of my questions mostly about the Spiritual Hermits.
My favorite sections are
Chapter 3 - Christ's Call - In this section/chapter, it is explained how one is called to be a Spiritual Hermit. And really find out what to expect in a spiritual way about being a hermit.
This was such a meaningful chapter to me.
Chapter 6 - All about FOOD, CLOTHING and SHELTER...This was written about how one would have the simple foods, very, very simple clothing, and shelter. This was basically written for times of yesteryear, however, it depends on what the modern day hermit will choose today...
Highly recommend this book if you are curious about life of solitude or hermits.
This book should be required reading for anybody contemplating life as
A Roman Catholic Camaldolese
An Orthodox Romualdi or
Anybody else contemplating the lifestyle of a Christian Solitary.
It gives a broad outline of
The Hermit's Vocation,
The Hermit Life,
The Hermit's Prayer,
The Hermit's Asceticism,
Universal Love.
It answered several fundamental, burning questions that I had.
I am about to be initiated as an Orthodox Benedictine (Romualdian) Oblate Novice.
