This book I got for nothing, which was a great price! I liked the concept, the author, who wrote the book in first person, wrote in a staccato manner. He didn't use a lot of prepositions when he spoke or wrote and that was fine, but it annoyed me when the Japanese man also spoke in the same manner. I think the author should have considered that when writing. I skipped over the bit in the middle of the book about Japan and the POWs etc. It was scattered throughout the book but there was one place it went on for pages so I skipped that as it was not interesting (to me). Otherwise a good story line, quick to read but reasonably entertaining. I am not sure if I will read more from this author or not.Product details

Dull
Found this book very slow and uninteresting. It started out OK but lost my interest very soon into the book.Took me a long time to get through it. Would not recommend. Couldn't wait to get it finished.
Like any good detective story, this one hooks you from the beginning with a hit and run, a burglary and a kidnapping. George's girlfriend is missing and the police suspect him to be involved. There are a lot of twists and turns along the way, as expected, which keeps the story interesting and the reader attentive. Smith also provides many funny characters including the fat sergeant and the girlfriend's sister, Sue Greenslade - an unbearable woman. The story continues once the mystery is solved and this could lead to readers losing interest but it is an enjoyable journey nonetheless.
It's a good read not used to English writers but not hard to understand hard to put the book down after starting it
Great book to read keeps you wanting to read more at the end. Needs more added and kept going for enjoyment
Didn't like it being set in Britain. Plot wasn't fast moving and main character was very bland. Not a favorite
Sam Smith's protagonist is focussed on his work to the extent of ignoring almost everything else in his life. The disappearance of his long term live in girl friend gets his attention, but doesn't distract him from the surveillance his has been hired to do, nor does he report a crime he witnesses for fear it would compromise his results. Ultimately, the girl friend is found, the surveillance turns up a conspiracy which he exposes, and he comes to grips with his own demons with the help of a man whose race he has been taught to hate. A thoroughly intriguing mystery and character study.
